Author Single or Multiple database performance?

I run a fairly high traffic community web site and my current MySQL
database structure uses a primary database for the majority of
tables/data, but there are some supporting applications that were
installed to seperate databases.

My basic question is, is this the best scenario or is having all
applications using a single database for a single site less taxing
(connections, etc).

If breaking up data into seperate databases is actually a good thing I
have several tables I could migrate out of the primary database as well
(which has 143 tables and is about 370MB at this point).

Thanks,
Jim

Ack...is this not a good group to post a question like this? If so
maybe someone can direct me elsewhere?

Thanks,
Jim
