MySQL cluster for newbies

Sorry to ask for a dumbed down version of something so complex, but
here it goes. Please correct me if my understanding is wrong.

If a cluster is created using 4 computers, (2 running DB nodes, 1
running MGM node, and 1 running API with apache running PHP app) the
application querying the cluster would query the API node running on
localhost, correct?

If I'm way off please inform me so I do a lot more testing and research
before I even present this as an option to my developers.
