Author Regarding the space requirement of a disk

Hi all,
I have been assigned to create a formula which should compute
the disk size which should be allotted to some database and it should
not fall short for some period.

Iam calculating the size of the data for that period according to the
given requirement but i have some doubts regarding other things which
i have to consider for disk space.

Can you please explain
1. what is the approach i have to take to estimate the sizes of
indexes which will be formed for the user tables ( and i dont know for
how many tables the index will be formed ). Do i have to take an
optimistic thinking that every table will possess index.

2.What size i have to allocate for the back up files . Do i have
to take the complete data size into consideration.

It would be better if more information provided on this topic.
Please help me in this .

thanks and regards

Ya, I think lots of more info is needed like:

1) The DBA should give an estimate on database size...how many
tables, indexes, how much data in it etc
2) If archive log mode than arhives also need space.
3) Some times backups are also stored on server..though this is not
best to do..that needs space.
4) Always better to be optimistic and have much more that what the
estimate is...actually as work goes on they come up with more and more
things that are unplanned..So I would ask for a lot ( may be 20-30 gb)
for unplanned works...

Just my opinion...

If you don't know, how are we supposed to know?

depends on how long you want to retain backups, how often you do them,
if you take incremental backups....

It's probably more expensive to calculate such a figure, which then,
will still be at best an estimation, than to just throw some disk
space at the server and if it is not sufficient to add more.

2. You need to take into consideration more than the size of the
database, you might want some redundancy, and don't forget archived
logs. Or less, if you have some large amount of read-only data that
you don't need to backup often. I think this recommended disk limit is
too small:
