We have a VB6 application that connects using ODBC to Oracle database.
Currently we are using Oracle 8.1.7, with ODBC driver 8.1.7.1.

How backwardly compatible is the ODBC driver supplied with 10g than
that for 8i? I've looked on the web for the release notes, currently
out of the office so don't have the disks to hand, so if someone could
post a link of where to download them from it would be useful.

I know it's an open-ended question, but does anyone know of any major
upgrade issues they have come across during a similar upgrade?

Also, my understanding is that the ODBC driver supplied with 8i was not
compatible with jet databases in the same format as Access 2000 and
greater (Jet 4.5 I think, but could be wrong). Are the later ODBC
compatible?

I have been unable to get Access XP/2003 to connect to an Oracle 10gR1
server using the full client; the 10.1.0.3 Instant Client works fine,
but that's been removed from OTN/Technet and the 10.1.0.4 Instant Client
doesn't have an ODBC component. I haven't tried the 10.2 Instant Client
(company policy is to not use a client of a later release than the server,
which is running 10.1.0.4).

The 9i client worked fine with 9i and 10gR1 servers, except for triggering
a bug in the unpatched 10g server which caused massive database corruption.

Hi Wotan,

not quite your answer but i can vouche that we are using a vb6 client
against 9.2 sp5 using the 8.17 driver without incident.

have you knocked up a small vb6 test app that tests the driver against
the features you will be using in your 10g database?

good luck
