Oracle Reference Books from Oreilly
|
|
|
| This may not be the best place to discuss this but anyway it is related to
Oracle.
I notice that the Oracle books from Oreilly are a bit outdated - mostly on
9i and before. I'm just wondering if their focus have been shifted to other
areas and no longer eager to provide 10g related titles. Anyone got
information related to this?

| Given the fact that at least half of the planet is still using 9i and
8i, I'm not sure why you worry.
Do you know every 9i feature?

| 1- just because a book has Oracle 9 in the title does not mean it is
not still relavent. Most of what Jonathan Lewis wrote in Practical
Oracle 8i about how Oracle really works is still true.
2- it takes time to develop new books that are written on the new
release rather than just the previous version of the book with a title
update. In fact there are more than a few Oracle X books out whose
content is really X - 2.
Picking out good Oracle books isn't that easy. The only "official"
books are the manuals and even those contain more than a few errors.
Look at the content in relation to what you need to study/learn and
inside information on edition and copywright more than anything the
cover says.

Exactly the point. I know too little about Oracle that I cant even tell if
the features I am trying to learn is outdated or not.
To be more specific, in learning the built-in packages, the latest book I
found from Oreilly is "Oracle Built-in Packages" published in 1998. To be
frank, in other computer related books, 1998 sounds like stone age. So I
just want some advice if that book is still containing the up-to-date
information.

The book is an antique.
Far better to study the demos at www.psoug.org and read the online
docs at tahiti.oracle.com.

The "Expert One-on-One Oracle" book by Tom Kyte has an appendix that
covers what he considers to be the "required" packages for everyone to
be familiar with. I think this only goes up through 8i, but this is one
of those essential books you should probably have anyway -- and it might
be enough to avoid buying the 1998 book you mention (which sits on my
shelf but doesn't get much use these days).
For 9i, consider the following very good value:
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/oracle9ipdf/
which is "10g aware". If you search the downloadable PDF document for
"DBMS_", you will find additional information and examples on some of
the more important, newer 9i packages (or updates to 8i packages), such
as DBMS_STATS, DBMS_LOGMNR, DBMS_REDEFINITION, DBMS_FGA, DMBS_FLASHBACK,
and DBMS_WM.

| Why cant you give straight forward answers ? If you know about any such
book then provide the link else just do not post ! May the reader wants
to upgrade or figure out some feature that is not there in the earlier
version.Just asking "irrelevant questions" wont add to one's
creadibility. Moreover I do not think that wheather the person knows
every 9i feature or not should be of anyone's concern.

By top posting you immediately start off many yards behind the line of
scrimage.
That said ... this is usenet. Sybrand can post, as long as he is
on-topic anything he wishes. If you aren't happy with what he has posted
then the onus is upon you to provide a better answer: Not to criticize
what he has done. That you didn't have anything to post other than
criticism reminds me of the following:
Critics are like eunuchs in a harem; they know how it's done, they've
seen it done every day, but they're unable to do it themselves
