Author The "\\." notation for Machine Name in Named Pipes

Cany any one tell me how the "\\." notation used in Named pipes gets
transformed into the Machine Name of the Server on which the SQL Server 2000
default instance resides?

We are currently running an unclustered SQL server 2000 environment (with
failover through Legato AAM/replistor) with linked servers (all servers are
Win2k).

When the Primary production server is rebooted, the "instances installed on
this server" entry in the Network Server Utility comes up with that server's
Netbios alias instead of the actual machine name. This, I believe, is
causing SQL Server 2000 to pick up the wrong "server name" which seems to
cause MS DTC to error out with a XACT_E_CONNECTION_DO
WN error in the SQL
Server Logs, and subsequently SQL server fails to listen on the default port
of 1433 as is intended.
