Hi,

Anyone currently using the Veritas Backup Exec. 9.1 SQL Agent for doing SQL
Server 2000 backups?

The environment I just inherited is using the Veritas software for daily
t-log backups and weekly full db backups. However the SQL Server is also
implementing backups (full, t-log) remotely to a share that gets backed up
weekly as well. I understand the backup strategies for backups in SQL
Server but I'm not sure what affect the Veritas SQL backups will have on the
SQL Server backups.

How are you using/combining the Veritas SQL backups with SQL Server backups?

Thanks

Jerry

Don't mix tlog backups. Yo need to restore them in sequence. I suggest you do SQL backups, db and
tlog. Especially if you are familiar with that. If you feel for it, you can use veritas to do db
backups,. as that will not break the chain of log backups (assuming veritas does something strange
like truncating the log before the db backup).

Thanks Tibor...that was what I was concerned about. I think I'm going to
schedule full backups and t-log backups using Maint Plans to a remote share
and have the Veritas software backup the share contents to tape on a regular
basis.

Jerry,

you dont want to backup directly to a share.

backup locally and then copy to the share.

Don't mix backups... Either use Veritas, or standard SQL..

There is no problem backing up directly to the share - i prefer it..

I agree that in most cases I would prefer to back locally. Backing up to
a share can certainly slow down the backup process. But for some
servers, this may not be an issue if off-hours activity is low. You also
find some customers have limited server drive / SAN space and backing up
to a share is the only option.

But for raw backup speed, local backups to a different array than the
data/log is the way to go.
