Author How do you resolve - SQL Server is terminating due to 'stop' reque

Hi,

Installation of MSDE SP3A fails on XP SP2 with these messages in the log:-

Warning: override, autoexec procedures skipped.
SQL Server is terminating due to 'stop' request from Service Control Manager.

Lots of people seem to be having this problem but there does not seem to be
a solution apart from manually editing the registry. Presume I need to follow
instructions in Knowledge base article 290991.

Question - As I plan to ship MSDE (or SQL Express) to thousands of users
with no IT skills (teachers in UK schools) is there a tool to automate the
cleaning of the registry for a SQL named instance which has not been
installed or uninstalled cleanly? Or is MSDE not the product to use on
teachers desktops?

PS We provide unlimited free support to purchasers of our product. This has
not been a problem for us until we started using MSDE.
