Author Standard Edition vs Workgroup Edition

Hello all,

I am looking at deploying SQL Server as part of an application service under
the new Service Provider Licencing model and am trying to make the
distinction between Standard Edition and Workgroup Edition. The comparison
matrix here http://www.microsoft.com/sql/evalua...iew/default.asp says
what features is has, but doesn't tell me what it DOESN'T have. Specifically:

1. Is it crippled in any way (like Personal edition with concurrent queries)
2. Are there specific performance limitation of any sort (concurrent
connections/queries; number/size of databases; stored proc performance,
indexing performance etc etc)

I need to know whether Workgroup edition will survive as a platform for a
web-based application. I know the standard line is that Workgroup Edition is
for "small businesses on a workgroup"; but is there actually any fundamental
difference in the technology?

Please advise.

Thanks.

Hi the only difference that I can see is the tools that Standrad provide is
more than in the workgroup. check the url that you mentioned for the
following difference:

Standard Edition includes all of the features of Workgroup Edition plus the
following:
Analysis Services
Data Transformation Services (DTS)
Reporting Services
SQL Profiling and performance analysis tools

Workgroup Edition includes key features that allow you to easily manage and
organize your data:
Enterprise Manager
Full-Text Search
Import/Export
Replication (snapshot, transactional, and merge)
Stored procedure development and debugging tools

Workgroup is very similar to standard but with a limit on the memory and
processors. It does not have any of the limits that MSDE had such as
concurrent queries and db size. Is it OK for your web app? Probably but it
all depends on how much activity you have. Only testing can tell that as
each app has different characteristics. The hardware plays a big factor as
well.

Thanks for the reply. Exactly what I needed.
