I am relatively new to the SQL Server DBA community and have been tasked to
find out when SQL Server Service Packs and Hotfixes are released. Can anyone
tell me if they have a schedule for them or if they bring them out when they
need them? Also if you could point me in a direction to find this
information. I fell like I have been the whole way around the internet and
still haven't found the answer.

Microsoft releases them when they want. Usually after sufficient
hotfixes have been released for the current release and when they want
to update functionality in the product. There have been 4 service packs
in 5 years and many hotfixes in between.

A few more notes.

Many times hot fixes are only intended to fix a very specific problem. I
have known shops to install all hotfixes as they appear. This is very
dangerous as hot fixes go through a very limited test cycle. On the other
hand, Service Packs are tested and include all hot fixes. I always advise do
not appy a hot fix unless you are seeing the specific problem mentioned. Just
wait untill the next service pack comes out, which goes through a much more
intensive testing cycle.

Thanks so much. Those were really helpful tips.
