Author SQL server 2000 system shutdown times

What is the "normal" amount of time it should take to shutdown and restart a
system running SQL server 2000 on Win Server 2003? It's takes a couple of
hours to shutdown and can take an hour or more to start, as well. Does that
sound normal? Would it be faster to shutdown if I turned off services or
ran a backup right before restarting?

Hi

I have never known a server to take that long to shut down, you should make
sure that you are not running any other unnecessary services and that
everything is patched to the most recent versions.

If you shutdown SQL server before shutting down the server, then it may
prove/disprove that it is SQL Server that is causing the problems.

Thanks for the response, John. I think that I may have traced the problem
back to some Microsoft critical updates. This problem seems to have started
after the last ones I installed. It turns out that all of my services seem
to be locked up, which I hadn't noticed before. I can't stop any that are
running or start any that are not. So I can't install or uninstall programs
because the msi service can't start. I guess I'll have to try starting in
safe mode and see what I can do. I think that the slow start up and shut
down times are due to the machine trying to stop/start services that are not
responding.

Hi

It is always best to run the minimum software that is required including
disabling services that are not needed.

You may want to check that device drivers are also current.

If you can not stop the services yourself, check any errors that are
produced on screen or in the event log.

I tracked the problem down to the APC PowerChute software which has a java
certificate bug causing all of my problems. Removed the software and voila
all is well.
