Problem: MSDE and Microsoft SQL folders were manually deleted from within
C:\Program Files. Now I am unable to get MSDE or SQL to install
successfully again. I tried to re-install my original version of SQL and
MSDE, but the attempt failed, producing an error message: "The SQL Server
service failed to start." I downloaded Microsoft "SQL Server 2000 Desktop
Engine (MSDE 2000) Release A" and tried to install that, but nothing happens
(2 popup windows appear briefly and disappear.) I tried to clean the
registry of "msde" and "sql" entries, and tried installing SQL and MSDE
again, but that didn't help. I am now at the point where I am considering
reformatting the C: drive. Does anyone know of any other alternatives? Am I
doing something wrong in my recovery attempts?

If you work with SQL Server long enough, you will find yourself dealing with
a brokern install. Welcome to the club.

| Kevin,
I experienced a similar problem during a reinstall of 2005 . I
discovered a Microsoft tool called InstallerCleanUP. I displays a
msicuu2.exe. After I ran it, the reload worked. If you try it, let me know if
it works.
