is it possible to install sol server 2005 ( not the express version) other
than the default
"c:\program files\Microsoft Sql Server"
like somewhere in drive D:

Yes, if you do an unattended installation.

You can pick the location in the setup process. However SQL Server will
still use a lot of space on the system drive. Apparently this mandatory
space on the system drive is even bigger with the new service pack.

btw what is the difference between sqlserver 2005 and the advance pack?

I guess that is why the service pack is failing on me - I got only 2 Gb free
out 8 for the system drive. I will have to uninstall and re-install else
where

That is a good start. Also see the template.ini file on the installation CD. It contains a template
file for your unattended installation.

That advanced pack is, AFAIK, only relevant for Express Edition, where it contains some additional
stuff which isn't in the "normal" Express installation.
