| I develop web applications and have a fair amount of SQL
background/experience.
I've run into a situation whereby our IT group is using Virtual Server for
our Test platforms. I'm running SQL on my dev box ( P3 / 1.0 Gig RAM / no
drive array - just SATA 7200 RPM drive ). We attempted for several weeks to
get SQL to work on the VS box and finally a new server was added. Better
processor, more RAM still running VS.
My ? is I'm not convinced Virtual Server is up to snuff for running a
serious Test SQL environment.
For example, I made a backup copy of my development DB ( around 5 G ). The
restore on the VS SQL implementation is now running at 60 minutes plus. The
entire machine is feeling sluggish.
As a test, I took the same file. Created a new database on my local system
and restored the backup file to the new database. Total time 10 minutes 50
seconds.
I'm struggling with the IT guys as they think the VS is faster and of course
they love this environment because they can restore a server in an hour if a
drive dies, etc.
I've read litereature on line Googling the products and I've read people
using the product and saying it's o.k. I'm just not convinced a VS running
on top of another OS and running robust SQL applications is the way to go and
the loads of the DB have me concerned. I just can't see how a VS on a
system, even mounted across a raid 5 environment is going to outperform a
system with a mirrored OS drive and seperate raid environments for the
data/log files.
Any thoughts on this issue?
