Author Any adverse impact from changing registry key SQLDataRoot?

I need to change the value for the following registry key
- HKLM\Software\Micros
oft\MSSQLServer\Setu
p\SQLDataRoot
to a value which reflects a different directory on disk. This SQL Server
has a dozen databases in it which serve a dozen different applications. I am
making the change for only a single application. Will this have any negative
or unpredicatable impact on any applications, or is it just a passive setting
that comes into play when creating a new database? Does it get used when
restoring a database?

thanks
