Author SQL Mail not working with Outlook

Hi,

I have SQL Server 2000 SP 4 installed on a Windows 2003 server. I am trying
to use SQL Mail and SQL Agent Mail. I have installed Outlook 2003 and have
created a mail profile - called SQLMail. I do not have an Exchange server and
I am using a POP3 server.

The email profile uses the domain user account (domain\sqladmin) that also
starts SQL Server and SQL Agent, as well as the SQL Server service. I have
set up SQL Mail and SQL Agent Mail and both give me no errors when I"press
the "Test" options.

However, I am not getting my email messages!!

When I start up Outlook, I get an error stating that the .pst file for the
profile is in use and Outlook simply exits. If I disable the profile on SQL
Server, I can start Outlook and the emails do go out.

I checked the BOL & KB articles and it states that I need to have Outlook
2002 (and I presume 2003) running continuously on the server, for the email
do go out. OK, but how do I get that profile to run in Outlook, if the .pst
file is locked by SQL Server, and vice versa?

I even tried to create a second mail profile, started Outlook on the server
with this second profile and then try to send email thru SQL Server, using
the original profile, but nothing comes out!

What does the KB article mean when it says that "for Outlook 2002, the MAPI
spooler logic was moved in-process, so any non-Exchange messages sent (such
as those to an Internet mail server) require the Outlook client to be
actively running on the server computer.

If the Outlook client is not left open, outgoing messages will remain in the
Inbox until such time as the Outlook client is opened when they will be sent.
This behavior is not seen with messages sent to an Exchange server".

How can I keep Outlook running for the mail profile, if I can't even open it
if SQL Server already has the .pst file open? How can I bypass the .pst
deadlock when using Outlook 2003 and SQL Server 2000?

Please help!
