Author SQL2000 meltdown on its way?

Hi,
We have SQL 2000 running with several databases live to the public. In
the next few days our web developers are rolling out substantial
updates to the system and history tells me this could go badly wrong!
Presently I have a maintenece plan which does a complete db backup each
night and hourly log backups on the hour but restoring in the past has
mucked up permissions and accounts (as you can see I'm no expert
here!). Am I doing something wrong with the maintenence plan or is this
normal with SQL 2000? Secondly has anyone any improved ideas what I can
do to minimise the problems if something does go wrong? I thought about
getting an XP box with identical SQL setup and asking the developers to
roll out there first to test the water....Does anyone have a step by
step process for completly recreating the DB with permissions should
the worst occur?

Any ideas appreciated.
