MS SQL Server - unable to monitor via perfmon

unable to monitor via perfmon

i have a couple of instances of sql server around and i can access all of
them via perfmon just fine except for one. basically perfmon hangs and the
mem usage spikes for sql server.

has anyone seen this before?
