Author Set default SQL Server-instance

We had SQL Server 2000 as the default sql server instance on a machine.
Now we have installed a SQL Server 2005 under the instance name sql2005.

We are able to connect to the new sql server instance by postfixing the host
in the connection string like this: server/sql2005.

How can we set up the server machine so that the new server becomes the
default sql server instance so that we don't have to prefix the connection
strings?

This means we have to set up all the databases and users/logins, or just
install over the existing one?

Hi
No,backup your databases and keep them in the safe place.
Re-install SQL Server and then restore all user's databases

I don't believe it, the server costs around $10.000 so there must be some
more elegant way of doing this.

You can upgrade the SQL Server 2000 instance to SQL Server 2005 in place.
If the SQL Server 2000 database the one that has the production data on it?
If not, you'll have to transfer the database from the named instance.
