Author Which SQL Server 2005 version with webserver?

Hello,

which version of SQL Server 2005 should I use with IIS6.0? The database
is just needed for a medium size website. Am I comfortable with a
Workgroup licence with 5 CALs? The only "client" that accesses my
database is the IIS, isn't it? Or do I need a CAL for every user, that
accesses my database simultaneously?

thanks,

Omar

Yes, if you can identify the users that connect to our webserver you
can do that, but for an intenet application that is in most cases not
possible, so you have to normally use a processor licence.

What are you asking? What licesing type? Or what edition?

CAL licensing means that every user that will be accessing the SQL Server need a CAL. It doesn't
matter if the accesses will be through some other application. Also, we are *not* referring to
simultaneous users here. So, if this is an Internet application, you have to go for Per Processor
licensing: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/faq.mspx

Thank you for your answers. As I understand, I have to purchase a "per
processor" license. Due to the limitation of the Express Edition to 1
GB of RAM the best choice would be the "Workgroup Edition" I guess,
because this is the next in size. Do you think this is a good choice?

I'm using the Workgroup edition here, mainly due to cost. Because I didn't
need the BI parts of Standard, and my server has 2 physical processors (4
logical) and 2GB RAM, the Workgroup edition fits nicely with my hardware and
was about £1000 cheaper than Standard - there's a difference in price in the
Per Processor licenses for the two editions, so the saving is pretty good
when you have to buy 2 of them :)
