Author MSDE and Express conflict?

Does anyone know if it is possible to have both MSDE 2000 and SQL Server
Express 2005 installed on the same system without any conflicts? Are there
any MS articles that clearly states if this is or isn't possible? There is
no problem installing them both on the same system but will they work
totally independent of each other? The reason I ask is this.

My client installed our software with MSDE 2000 (installed as instance name
"X") on a computer (computer A). He backed up a number of databases on A,
moved them to another computer (computer B) and then restored them there
(also MSDE 2000 instance name "X"). This worked fine.
After a while he installed SQL Server 2005 Express on computer A. This was
installed in the SQLEXPRESS instance. He backs up the same database as
before (they are still in the instance "X") but when trying to restore them
on computer B he now gets the error

"Too many backup devices specified for backup or restore; only 64 are
allowed"

He then uninstalls SQL Server 2005 Express from computer A and the
backup/restore procedure now works again.

To me this clearly sound like a conflict between MSDE and Express. I
understand that the backup header has changed from SQL Server 2000 to 2005
and that you cannot restore 2005 databases on a 2000 SQL Server. In this
case there were 2 totally separate instances so I thought it would not
conflict but it seems it has.

Anyone?
Thanks
Fredrik
