Author Slow establishing connection on LAN

Hi,
I've got SQLServer 2000 developer installed on one machine with a named
instance and I'm using the test connection button in UDL file properties.
From one laptop it takes 5 seconds but from a 2nd, slightly older (and
slower) machine it is almost instant. The only difference is that the 2nd
one has slightly older drivers. I've found the same problem with the ODBC
test connection as well. All machines are 100MB Nics.
Once the connection is established both clients run equally as fast for
queries etc.
I have tried setting the clients to use tcpip only, I tried explicitly
setting the port to 1056 instead of 1433.
As far as I can tell the settings are identical but one is still way slow.
On the server box it is also instant.
Any ideas as to where to look for the problem?

Thanks a lot
Brian
