Hi,

We are supporting a system where the SQL server machines and web-servers are
configured as stand-alone servers (i.e. each in a workgroup of one)(don't
ask) . While I guess this prevents hackers being able to access all machines
by hacking one, it has its drawbacks.

I'm trying to consolidate perfomance data onto a central SQL machine from
all these servers.

On server A, I have PerfMon happily logging data to a database called
'PerfMon'.
SQL on server A is configured for Mixed Authentication.

Now on server B (also running SQL), I'm setting up PerfMon to use a set of
counters and wish to log these on server A. As per guidance, I configure the
a System DSN to talk to SQL Server A, and use SQL Authentication. I test this
connection and it is fine. Also the SQL Login specified in this DSN is added
as a
Login to SQL on server A and is added as a user of the PerfMon database (with
appropriate permissions).

When I try an start this logging on server B, I get an error regardless of
what values I select under the 'Run As' dialog in the Counter Logs options in
PerfMon.

The key text of the error message is:-

"The description for Event ID ( 3041 ) in Source ( PDH ) cannot be found.
The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message
DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use
the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description ...
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user
'(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection"

Am I doing anything wrong, or do thse machines need to be added to domains
etc. and trust relationships setup?

Ideally I'd like to get this logging setup without having to do drastic
surgery(!)

If surgery is needed, pointers as to the least disruptive means would be
welcome.

Thanks in advance for (helpful) comments

Craig
