Author ODBC and SQL Alias

I'm working in an environment where I'm trying to connect from an
application server using ODBC to a SQL server alias and just want to
make sure I'm not making any assumptions about my configuration.

When configuring the Connection properties for TCP our server setting is
set to the hostname of the server and the alias is hostname\alias_name.
Is this correct?

To add complexity to the process, we are going through a firewall and
the port is set to a port other than 1433 so we are setting the port to
the alternate_port.

Have I understood the Help files correctly for the slightly tweaked
configuration?

Thank you.

Robert
