Author ODBC from connection to SQL across untrusted domains

We've recently had a reshuffle of departments. The SQL databases that access
connected to are now on a separate domain from the access users. Looking for
ideas on how to configure the ODBC's to connect to SQL.

The security folks don't want to use SQL users b/c the passwords are sent in
clear text which is a security risk. Since this is the easiest option, I'd
be happy to hear how they are over blowing the SQL password problem. NT
authentication is also problematic because they don't want to create a trust
between the domains.

At one point I tinkered with Application roles unsuccessfully, and the
admins are thinking about trying to use the "runas" command to start access
and authenticate that way.

So my question (finally) - is there some method of authentication to SQL
that we could use?

Thanks in advance,

~CB
