MS SQL Server ODBC - eventid 3041 login failed

I'm getting eventlog error 3041 from pdh '[odbc sql server driver] login
failed' when starting a perfmon counter log configured to log to a sql
database. The server is running 2003/SP1. An identically configured
perfmon counter log works just fine on another 2003 server (but without
SP1). I've tried both types of authentication in the DSN: native and sql,
and they both fail. Any ideas what's causing this problem and how to fix
it?
