Author Linked servers VS. ODBC connections ???

Looking for your opinions. I have a SQL 2000 server which is used mainly
for reporting on data from an AS400 (transitioning from AS400 to a SQL app
on a different server). There are many ODBC connections each made to link
to a certain data store on the AS400, and then there is a query and/or a DTS
package created to pull data for each report. as we approach 50+ reports
you might be able to see where I'm going. Is there a better way? could I
use one linked server connection to all data stores on the as400, and would
it be a bad idea to consolidate DTS packages, each of which also had it's own
scheduled job??? Thanks for any feedback..
