Query hangs depending on result set size

Hi,

running a query using an ODBC connection hangs depending on the size of
the resultset. I tried the following with osql.exe:
"Select top 12 * from Test": ok
"Select top 13 * from Test": run forever
Client is XP SP2, Server is SQL 2000 SP4, the client is connected to the
server via VPN.
Does anybody knows what could cause this behavior?
