What are the best practices to get the complete database schema into
VisualSourceSafe?

Or at least point me in the right direction.

If you are on SQL 2000, EM is probably a better choice, since you can
script the database, and opt to get every object in a file of its own.
This feature is missin from Mgmt Studio.
