How can I tell if MSDE is on my machine already?

You mean Control Panel / Admin Tools / Component Services / Console
Root Services (local)?
On my notebook I see
MSSQL$MICROSOFTBCM
and
MSSQLServerADHelper
not the ones you mention.
Anyhow, do you know what MSSQL$MICROSOFTBCM is about? Is it the MS
Office extension Business Contact Manager, and since I don't really
use the BCM, is this consuming a lot of resources and can I turn it
off / set it to manual start?
Thanks.
