| How do I deploy an Analysis Services 2000 database setup to a customer?
Thanks

| Do you mean your database setup or your server setup ? I guess all your info
for your database are saved when creating a backup of the database. Then
simply restore at your customers server. But of course be aware that your
datasources is correct if the location of your relational datamart is
different.

| Hi Bobby,
Thanks for your reply.
I would actually like only to copy the database schema if possible. Because
the datasource is different at our customer site (the database schema is of
course the same).
Regards
Henrik.

| Well,
actually I don't think it would be a problem to change the datasource after
a restore but of course you'll bring your data along if you use MOLAP. If it
is possible to connect to your customers server from your local analysis
manager then you could simply use copy and paste and the modify your
datasource and process your cube(s). But of course you want some scripting
tool, I guess. This is posssible in SSAS 2005, though.

| I am unfortunately not able to connect to the customer, we are selling the
solution to a lot of customers and I would like just to send them a file.
Yes I have seen the feature in 2005, that is whay I would like something
like it in 2000 :-)
So how does everybody actually distribute OLAP solutions?
Thanks
Henrik.

| Hi again Bobby,
This looks really great. Thank you very much.
Cheers
Henrik.

| There is actually a much simpler way of doing this in AS2K.
1. Right Click your OLAP Database and hit 'Copy'.
2. Right click your server and hit 'Paste'.
a. What this does is copy/paste the skeleton of your entire OLAP
database without the data.
3. Make a backup of your new database and send it to the customer.
4. Have them restore the .CAB file on their server.
5. Open up the data source(s) and change to which server/database is
at the customer.
6. Have them re-process the newly restored OLAP database.
That's it. HTH.

| Hi
I'm wondering: When I restore the database and want to edit it, I can
change the data source, but when I start the process of the cube it will
fail because the data source seems to be hardcoded inside the cubes
It seems that you don not have this kind of problems. May I ask which
data source you use (provider and so on)
Regards

| It might be a problem with the local datafiles for your cube.
You find these if you right click on your Analysis server name, choose
Properties and look for Data folder on the general tab.
Stop the OLAP service on the server your cube is running. Go to the data
folder, and delete all the data files for the cube you're working on. Start
the OLAP service, and try processing again. It should be able to process
from the new data source now.
You might want to archive your database / cube before doing it, if something
gets messed up though.

| You cannot actually change the data source for a database, but what you
can do is to change the connection properties of the existing database
to point it to a different relational source server/database.
This can seem slightly counter intuitive as the datasource will retain
the name of the old server and database, but is the only way to do it in
AS2k.
What a lot of people do is to set up the data source with a generic name
when they start building a new database. You do this by creating a
datasource and then copying and pasting it. When you paste it, you get
the option of specifying a new name. Once you have a second datasource
with a generic name you delete the initial datasource.
Once you start building cubes and dimensions off a datasource, its name
is hard coded into those objects and there is no supported way to change
it.
