Hi

I have Windows 2003 Enterprise server with SP1, and try install WSUS server.

Problem is it can't install WMSDE (SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine)

Hello,

Many factors can cause the installation failed. I suggest that you
perform the following steps to narrow down the issue:

Step 1: Referring to the article 320873 to manually remove all failed WMSDE
instances on the computer.

1. Remove all failed WMSDE instance:

If you failed to install SQL server 2000 instance before, you may also
refer to the following article 290991:

2. Reboot the server.

3. Remove all the files related to the failed SQL server or WMSDE instance
on the computer. By default, all the files are located in the C:\Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$WSUS folder. If you want to keep the
files, you may rename the folder.

Step 2: Performing the installation in the Clean Boot mode

====================

NOTE: A Clean Boot of the system can identify any drivers or programs that
may be interfering with the normal operation of your computer.

1. Click Start->Run, type Msconfig

2. Go to the Startup tab, and click the "Disable All" button.

3. Go to the Services tab, click to check "Hide All Microsoft Services" and
click the "Disable All" button.

4. Click Ok to exit and reboot your machine. The computer is in Clean Boot
mode.

5. Log on locally as the Administrator.

6. Make sure the requirements in the "Software and System Requirements" in
the ReadmeMSDE2000A.htm file are meet (important):

7. Install WSUS in Clean Boot mode

If it installs successfully, you can reset the server normal startup. To
reset System Configuration Utility to normal startup, follow these steps:

1. Click Start->Run, type Msconfig
2. On the General tab, click "Normal Startup - load all device drivers and
services", and then click OK.
3. Restart your computer.
