| a guy came to me yesterday with an extensive dBase 2 app sitting on an
old 486, and everything else in his office is running on a new, normal
XP network..
I'm a Paradox person, not a dBase person (Ken might remember me from the
old Borland days).. we have a simple set of common steps to get *really
old* Paradox stuff moved to PdoxDOS 4.x, so it'll run on the network..
*then* we worry about converting..
what do I need to do, to get that app moved to dBase 4 or 5, and running
on the network?

dBase 2??? As in over 20 years old?
If so, then run all the programs through dConvert, which has been
included with every DOS version of dBase I've ever had. This will do
about 90% of the work. The rest will involve compiling the results in
the newer version and seeing what error messages pop up and fixing
those.
I'm not positive, but I think the tables also have to be run through the
dConvert process.
Good luck!

yep.. if nothing else, I gotta get it off that old 486, before the 486 does
something stupid, like death (g)

so I can just go out and grab a copy of 4 or 5, and use that?

It will take some time to run all the conversions and figure out the
error messages, but, yes, a copy of dBase IV or dBase 5.0 for DOS will
do it. I would recommend getting 5.0. That's the last DOS version.
BTW, for the longest time, a copy of that last DOS version was included
on the cd for the Windows version. Don't know if the current one does
or not, however. So, if you don't find a copy of just the DOS version,
you might look for an older Windows version, like dB2K. Just expanding
your search possibilities.
Good luck. And feel free to pop back in here if the error messages have
you stymied <g>.
