| I want to install Dbase5.7 on a labtop running XP that does not have a floppy drive. I have copied the release floppies (7) onto a CD. Will I have problems installing from the CD. Normally, during installation one is prompted to insert next floppy. Ho
w will this be acheived when floppy contents are organized in 7 seperate directories on the CD. Thanks

| Should be no problems. I've used this arrangement to install from a network
file server.
I can't remember if 5.7 uses the .pak files or the .cab files. The setup
program responds a little differently to each type. When you finish a disk,
the setup program doesn't look for the next disk, it looks for the next part
of the setup file (which is located on the next disk). The setup program
will look in the current location and sometimes "diskX" folders on its own.
At the worst, if Setup cannot find the next file, it will ask you to locate
it manually. Just point it at the next folder that contains the file asked
for.
If that still doesn't work, copy all of the setup files to a single location
and run the setup program from there.

| I copied the contents of the 7 floppies (.pak files) to a CD. Running setup.exe from the CD installed Dbase 5.5 effortlessely.
One aside. Three of the floppies encountered read problems on 1 specific file on each. Retrying had no effect. A Google search revealed a tip on how to coax old floppies to give up their data. Rub all 4 edges of the floppy on a hard surface. This has t
he effect of slightly increasing the width of the floppy shell. To my delight and surprise I found it worked !

| I made a cd for installation of version 5.5 this way: I copied disk one to a foler named disk1, disk two to folder disk2 ...... disk seven to folder disk7. When I install the program i start with the install file in folder disk1. The installation runs wit
hout problems.
