| I try to convert an old dBase IV program which works perfecy i WIN98. I want to convert it, so I can run it unser XP-pro. The reason is that under XP it shows only the half screen size. I have a lot of @ n.n SAY commands which dBase 7.5 dont accept. What
shall I use instead?
Appriciate all suggestions.

I don't quite understand what you're saying. Are you saying that your
dBase IV program isn't displaying properly in XP? Try changing the font
size of your DOS window that dBAse is running in, or just switch it to
full-screen with Alt-Enter, and it should look just like it did under
DOS many years ago.
We use dBase IV continuously on XP, both SP1 and SP2, with no trouble.

The @/Say/Get/Read/and related commands were removed from the 32-bit
software.
You are going to have to learn to use, at the very least, the form
designer. There should be a chapter in the User Guide that came with the
sfotware that deals with upgrading from DOS.

The answer to your second question is yes.
For the first question, you'd be best served to rewrite the program in
the current version of dBase.

I'd say just install dBase IV on your XP machine (can be done just by
copying the directories), and continue to use the dBase IV version of
your app, while you start converting it to a windows version of dBase.
dBase IV runs fine on XP, though printer setup can sometimes be a bit of
a hassle, and really flies on modern hardware!

Can you tell me if it means lots program re-writing if I do the hyper jump from dBase 1V DOS to windows? If this is the way to go, which Dbase, Visual 7.5 or 2.61? Bearing in mind I'm no expert.

If you move to Windows, go with 2.6.1.1 -- the most recent release. 7.5
is not as stable or up-to-date.
No matter what, there will be rewriting. I make a living mostly
upgrading applications from DOS to Windows ...
