Author Tutorial Difficulties = Frustration

Am working through "The dBASE Plus Tutorial" but have hit a problem I seem
incapable of solving alone.

On page 19 of 22 in Module 3 instructions are to add a Method to the
previously written Base.cdm. Have done this, saved it, and then tried to
open Customer.dmd to continue with page 20.

BUT... I get an error and cannot open the datamodule.

Cannot Load Datamodule
An error occurred in your dataModule.
There may be invalid objects or missing external files.
Error: Not member of Class or Base class: CALCFIELD

I then deleted the added method and re-saved the base.cdm but I get the
same error when trying to open customer.dmd even after reloading dQuery and
even dBasePlus.

I've obviously done something wrong, but what?

Using v2.61.1 on Windows 98SE

Tony:

Skip the frustration and sink your teeth into some of this real meat!

I recommend the chapter (book) getting started by Ted Blue. It singlehandedly took me from 0 to 25 in the course of one weekend. Higher speeds will require that your return to the tutorial, but by then you'll have a good base.

There are also a lot of good short specific reads here:

Hang in there, it's worth it!

Thank you John. The potsdam URL is one I have been looking for, but could
never find.

I did solve my problem by remaking my datamodules. I think what I had done
was to write another custom datamodule and then saved it under the old
custom datamodule name. My guess is that in so doing the datamodules lost
their connection with the .cmd even though it was the same name.

The tutorial I'm using is the one from dBase which is identical to the one
on the Potsdam web site (They're all written by the same people, Nuwer and
Mayer, after all). The problem for me seems to be that the tutorial was
originally written four years back but dBase has changed in some respects
since so consequently the tutorial instructions don't always use the current
terminology and in one case misses out a crucial step in the data validation
section.

I'll take a look at Ted Blue's material!!
