Options for dBase IV under XP

I have a large number of multiuser dBase IV application I wish to run on Windows XP. My testing has shown that the programs will lose records because of the way XP handles file locking.

Will modifying the programs to use the files exclusively whenever records are appended solve the problem?

What about just running the programs in Visual dBase 5.7 on the XP systems?
