Maximum File Handle

| In dBase 2.5's Project Explorer, under the Inno tab and its BDE Settings
tab, there's a box for entering a number for Max File Handle. When set at 0
I couldn't open more than 3 forms in the deployed application, getting an
error message telling me to adjust the Max File Handle. I entered 10 and
still could only open 3 forms. I now have entered 40 and find so far that I
can open all the forms an end-user might reasonably want to open at the same
time.
My question is: How does one establish what number to enter into the Max
File Handle Box--dBase Help doesn't seem to offer advice on this.

This has been discussed heavily (Suggested BDE Settings) over in the
dbasetalk newsgroups, the programming one in particular. Set it high.
4096 for example.

| Thanks, that was a very helpful thread. I didn't know there was also a
news.dbasetalk.com.
Seems the thread allows for the default of MAXFILEHANDLES = 48 upto
MAXFILEHANDLES = 4096. Don't see that I need it set so large for my
application, especially since the present 40 is working and the dBase
default in the IDE is 48 and I've never run into a problem. Perhaps I'll set
it to around 200.
How much memory does the MAXFILEHANDLES setting take--not much I presume?

I doubt you'd notice. It's a setting that simply allows you to open that
many files via the BDE.

| Hi,
If you dont need set the properties for BDE than remove inside Inno
scripting the registry keys....
So this is fixed inside comming new release of ProjExp...

| Hi Malcolm,
I actually faced that problem as well because by default inside the Project Explorer, under Inno->BDE Settings, the value for the MAXFILEHANDLE is set to 0. All you need is to set to 4096. It will solve it :)

| Btw, does the link -> news.dbasetalk.com. exist?

| Mickey,
I read on the internet about news.dbasetalk.com having computer problems.
Try the following for information that may help, especially the latter:
http://www.alldbase.com/
and http://www.alldbase.com/Newsgroups.html (and try clicking on the enter
news.dbasetalk.com, 4th down highlighted in pink).
I've been using news.dbase.com. But when Ken Mayer mentioned
news.dbasetalk.com I discovered I already had it set up in my Outlook
Express news groups some long time ago and had forgotten it was there. I
find on my machine it still works to download messages.
However, news.dbasetalk.com entered as a URL brings up a quite different
company.
In Outlook Express news groups, I have a news group set up as
news.dbasetalk.com. When I right click on news.dbasetalk.com and then on
Properties:
Under General tab I have News Account = news.dbasetalk.com
Under Server tab I have Server Name = news.dbasetalk.com
This was all set up some years ago, before, I believe, news.dbase.com,
became the main newsgroup for dBase. News.dbasetalk.com still seems to work
for me. Others might be able to tell you how to get it set up as a
completely new news group on your system.
Hope this is of some help.
