Using remote desktop
|
|
|
| Anyone out there running dbase apps with MS remote desktop? If you are, have you run into any problems? Can you give any advice on printing options?
I'm using Plus 2.21 running on XP and would like to set up a client to use remote desktop to run the app at their location.
Thanks for any ideas,
Rick

| I have tried and not run into any problems. (I am assuming he is running the
application at a Work station from say his home) If the program should work
normally as if he were sitting at the workstation.
There are some quirks to watch for. XP Home and Pro allow for switching
users. XP Pro, when logged on to a Server 2003 doesn't. And when you remote
into a workstation, the station locks out local control (this is remote
control only, not remote assistance). On Server 2003 it is a little
different. In our case it actually logs out the current user and locks the
server while under remote control. This plays havoc with our e-mail and
backup software as they do not want to configure as true services. When the
remote session starts, the current user is logged out and those two programs
are shut down. (This likely doesn't happen with Exchange Server...but I try
to use as little of M$ software as possible)
As for printing, AFAIK, it is as if he is sitting at the Work station so it
will print out at any printer it is connected to. If he wants the report to
be run at work, but come out of his home printer, I don't know if it will do
that (I don't think it can, but I could be wrong)
A work around would be to have the Work station print the reports to PDF and
then file transfer it home and then print it out.
Strange thing about MSN remote desktop is that the hard drive connections
are done at the host station, not the client. That is your Work computer
gains your home hard drives while you are connected. It seems a little
backwards that if you want to move a file from Work's My Documents to your
home drive, your home computer sends its folder information to the work
computer and then the work computer relays the same information back to you
via the screen.

I've put all my applications on TS 2003 and it works fine. Printing is not a problem if you flag the print in the local resources tab, even at home on a local printer.
It's easy also to maintain because you need only maintain one machine and this without installing a BDE on every PC

| Good to get your experinece.
Thanks,

There was just now a very good article in Germanys best computer=20
magazine (c't) about different types of remote desktop clients and=20
servers.=20
As soon as some other systems than Server2003 and XP _PRO_ are involved,=20
check out "realVNC". There is a personal edition sufficient for most=20
needs.

| André,
Wie gehts!
If my high school German wasn't so rusty I'd check out that article. At this point, my German vocab is limited to maybe a dozen words.
Have heard a little about VNC.
Thanks again for the info,
Rick
