Or lack therof actually. I go to do, type dbase, and nothing happens,
except the cd>dbase5 moves down a line or two on the screen. This DID
work two days ago, which is why I am puzzled. Any ideas?? Using Win XP.
Installation of dbase IV still works fine.

Thanks,

Sorry, I lost an "s". Go to DOS (as in prompt), type "dbase" to enter
the environment, and nothing happens.

No, but it worked two days ago, and dbase IV works fine.

I have several versions of dBASE DOS. If you have each of them in
different DOS directories and each directory is in your DOS path and
each has a DBASE.EXE file then DOS never knows which one you want to
fire up. In my case I rename the DBASE.EXE files to dB3.exe,
dB3PLUS.EXE, dB4.EXE and dB5.EXE respectively.

So, if you are not getting to your dBASE5 DOS program but dBASE IV works
I would guess something has occurred with you DOS Path and/or one
dBASE.EXE is stepping on another.

But, if that were the case, something else would open up, I would think.
A different version would start.

And, if the path were messed up, DOS would say it couldn't find the
program.

In Glenn's case, however, absolutely nothing is happening! No error, no
other program opening, nothing.

Glenn, do you have a backup copy of dbase.exe that you can restore to
this computer? Just in case something has stepped on it? Also, check
the config.db to verify it's not hosed.... (and doesn't have something
like command=quit as one of its lines <g> )

I have neither in my path. I just go to the DOS prompt, switch
directories and type dbase. tried renaming it, same exact result.

No, nothing spectacular in the db file, just safety off,scoreboard off,
etc. Just replaced the dbase.exe file AND the config.db and nothing
happened. I would not be so surprised if it had not already worked the
other day.

Well, it was worth a shot.

That's the puzzling thing. Something must have changed somewhere
between the time it ran and the time it didn't run.

Sorry, but I'm out of ideas....

Take a look at the file signature. Mine from the original dBASE 5 DOS
disks dBASE.EXE 3,361,045 8-13-94 5:00:00

The one that dBASE Inc. provided with subscription CD's were
dBASE.EXE 3,361,045 8-12-94 21:00:00

Whatever it is if it is as installed it should be surrounded by a bunch
of files with the same date and time. If it is substantially changed
that could be the problem.

All of my files are 8-13-94, 12:00 AM. Size is correct too.

In your original message you said:

The path to my dBASE5 exe-file is "L:\dbase5\dbase.exe"

When I go in dBASE Plus to the diretory "L:\" and type dos in the command
pane a DOS window opens and I see the following,

*****
Microsoft Windows 2000 [version 5.00.2195]
(C) Copyright 1985-2000 Microsoft Corp.

L:\>
*****

When I type cd>dbase5 in the DOS window and press Enter I see the
following,

*****
Microsoft Windows 2000 [version 5.00.2195]
(C) Copyright 1985-2000 Microsoft Corp.

L:\>cd>dbase5
Adgang nægtet.

L:\>
*****

Adgang nægtet, means Access denied.
The line cd>dbase5 has not moved down a line or two on the screen.

When I type cd dbase5 in the DOS window and press Enter I see the
following,

*****
Microsoft Windows 2000 [version 5.00.2195]
(C) Copyright 1985-2000 Microsoft Corp.

L:\>cd>dbase5
Adgang nægtet.

L:\>cd dbase5

L:\DBASE5>
*****

I am now in the correct folder, and when I type dbase in the DOS window and
press Enter dBASE5 will start as expected.

I can't reproduce the results you get and I get an error when attempting to
change folder with the command you are using.

I think I may have confused you. I open my DOS window, which says
"c:\windows>". I then go to the dbase5 directory, and it says
"c:\dbase5>", NOT "cd\dbase5", my fault. When I type "dbase", the DOS
screen is emptied, and the "c:\dbase5>" moves down a few lines.

My apologies for the error

And you go from the windows directory to the dbase5 directory by typing,

cd ..
cd dbase5

or you type,

cd C:\dbase5

Correct?

When I type dbase in the correct folder dBASE5 starts, I then type quit and
dBASE5 closes. All previous commands in the DOS window are removed and I
see the following,

-----
*** END RUN dBASE

L:\DBASE5>
-----

If the screen is emptied something did run.

Try in dbasedos.ini to change the value for PrintConfig from FALSE to TRUE.
This will print out some info before dbase starts. In ini-file it promises:

; Use PrintConfig=TRUE to display selection options on startup, useful
; when debugging environmental problems.

this is what printed:
-- KERNEL Options --
CrashVerbose = no
GDTSize = 16K
NullPtrCheck = no
TransferBufferSize = 8K
-- LINEXE Options --
DemandLoad = no
LibPath32 = c:\DBASE5

Sound good??

Thanks,

Glenn
