Author SPSS Data Editor hangs when opening wide files from dBAse

When I try to open a wide .dbf table (created by dBase plus) with more than 300 fields in the record by using the SPSS FILE, OPEN DATABASE, NEW QUERY function, the SPSS data editor hangs and I get a \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"program not responding\\\\\\\\\\
\\\\\" m
essage. The SPSS data editor seems to be able to import smaller tables created by dBase using this procedure so I know the connection is working. I have tried using both the Microsoft OCBC driver for dBase and the SPSSS dBase driver and get the same hang
with each of them.

My main reason for using dBase is that the number of fields per record is 1024 (not 255 like ACCESS, Foxpro, etc.), but I need to get this data out and into SPSS to look at it. Can anyone suggest why this hang is occurring or how I can work around it. I a
m running on a Dell 8250 with XP service pack 2 with 512 megs ram. I have tried this on a similarly configured Dell laptop wtih the same problem occurring.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. A copy of the problem file I am trying to get into SPSS is attached.

Thanks,
Carl

Please follow the newsgroup guidelines and only post a message in one
newsgroup. The folk who try to assist with problems in these newsgroups
are volunteers, but we read all of them. You've posted this (in the
groups I've read so far) in at least three ... possibly more. It's
completely unnecessary. Thanks ...

Ken
