Is there a way to disable Sybase Central splash screen?
|
|
|
| Greetings,
Each of our branch stores have a server running ASA 9.0.2.3044 on Windows
Server 2003. We remotely administer these systems using Microsoft's RDP
client. Many of the stores have slow dial-up connections. When loading
Sybase Central on particularly slow connections I watch the Sybase Central
splash screen load up line by line for several seconds. Then the splash
screen blinks and loads up a second time just as slow. I think that if it
didn't have to render the splash screen, it would come up a little faster.
Is there any way that I can disable it? Also, we don't use the fast
launcher because we don't want this always running in the background.
Thanks,
Andy

| The fast launcher doesn't have much of a footprint... Have you tried running with that on, and benchmarking the
difference?

| Personally have found better to use the command line utilities over a slow
connection. Screen refresh is minimum
If the server is running over the WAN then you could probably connect
directly from your PC to the databse to administer as well

| I'll admit, I have not performed that test. However, just now I performed a
less than scientific comparison of starting scjview.exe with and without
fast launcher enabled on a certain painfully slow connection. The result
was that fast launcher appeared to offer no benefit in terms of startup
speed for scjview.exe in this environment.
1. Started scjview.exe without fast launcher. -- 85 seconds
2. Enabled fast launcher and verified that it was running in the background.
3. Started scjview with fast launcher -- 85 seconds
4. Rinse and repeat a few times with the same results
My hypothesis is that the majority of the time is spent rendering the
display. First the splash screen appears, then the main window loads and
then the splash screen appears again on top of the main window. By
comparison, version 3.2 (the non-java version) loads in 35 seconds and only
displays the splash screen once. It's nothing I can't live with and I can
always use command line utilities as stated in another reply. I only notice
it because we recently upgraded and I'm not used to the screen loading
twice.
Thanks,
Andy

| Hi Andy,
Yes, you can suppress the Sybase Central splash screen. To do this, add the
following line to your ".scRepository" file:
Config/test/ShowSplash=true
In a canonical Windows installation, the file is in "C:\Program
Files\Sybase\shared\
Sybase Central 4.3".
