Connection licensing
|

| Greetings,
I'd like to ask a connection licensing question.
PART I.
Let us consider the following:
- there's an application built in PowerBuilder
- an user logs into this application
- the application creates two transaction objects - each with it's own
connection to ASA as the same user;
Does this apply as 1 licence or 2 licences? Please provide the answer both in
concurrent and per-seat licensing model.
PART II.
Let us consider a more exact example:
- there's an application built in PowerBuilder
- there's an ASA database with 2 licences
- the user logs into the application, which creates 2 connections as the same
user (using two transaction objects)
1. Are there any more users able to connect to the ASA database (using Sybase
Central or DBISQL)?
2. Are there any more users able to connect to the ASA database using the
application?
Thank very much for anyone's response

| PART I.
This will count as a single connection in both licensing models assuming
that the connections are not from the same machine that hosts the engine.
PART II.
1. Are there any more users able to connect to the ASA database (using
Sybase
Central or DBISQL)?
CK> Yes. Connections made on the same machine as the server can
establish connections. A DBA user can also make a connection.
2. Are there any more users able to connect to the ASA database using
the application?
CK> Yes. See previous for details.

Chris, thank you very much for your response.
So you are saying, that if there is server S1 with ASA running, and a client
C1 (absolutely distinct computer), the user U1 on the client computer C1
runs the application and logs into it, the app creates two connections to
server S1, they are treated as a single connection?
So in the PART II case with exactly 2 licences, another user U2 on the
client computer C2 can run the app, log in (creating another two connections
to server S1) and work freely?
So (the third, but last "so"), still assuming the 2 licences, the user U3
using
the client computer C3 will NOT BE ABLE to run the app and log in?

| If I understand your setup, this is is correct. Until a connection is
made from c3, connections will be accepted on C1 and C2.
This is technical limits of how the licensing is enforced. However, the
technical enforcement of licensing may not fit the licensing that you
have purchased. You should consult your sales rep to ensure that your
usage is in compliance with your license.
