Author Database freezes server

We're in the process of updating a legacy app, with a new front end
build compiled under PowerBuilder 9.0 (moved from 6.0), and an upgraded
server, which runs under Windows 2003 Server.

We've installed a new copy of SQLA (CD is version 9.01, we've done the
maintenance update to 9.02) on the server. We updated to 9.02 because
when we installed 9.0 and tried to create a new database, the server
would occasionally lock up at the last stage of the Create New Database
wizard. The update to 9.02 solved that issue, and we were able to
recreate the database we needed. That wizard now completes properly.

However, in continuing testing, trying to stop the database service,
whether using Sybase Central or the Windows service manager, sometimes
the server will lock up. We get the message "Stop pending". Trying
subsequently to delete the service and re-specify it only gives the
"Delete pending" message, and even shutting down and restarting the
server doesn't help. The only cure seems to be unbelievably drastic; we
have to delete SQLA from the server and reinstall, creating a new
database from scratch. Needless to say, the client isn't awfully happy
about having to do this on a regular basis.

Software: Windows 2003 Server, running SQLAnywhere 9.01, patched to
9.02. Currently there are no users connected to the database; this is
an upgraded server and the environment is being tested before
deployment, and this is holding up deployment. Now it seems that the
continuing re-installation on the test server is affecting another
in-house app written in Java and using Miocrosoft SQL Server.

Does anyone have the slightest idea what's happening, please? Thanks in
advance for any help.

Are you running SP1 with Windows 2003. If not, this service pack
addresses a number of issues once of which I think is oddities in the
operation of services.

I've asked the client to check, Chris; he thinks they are running SP3
(?) but he will check and get back to me. Thanks for your quick response.

You're right, Breck; I did my own research on the Microsoft site after
he'd told me this, and I emailed him back to tell him. I'm waiting his
response to let me know what the situation really is !

Thanks,

Follow-up: Thanks for the advice, Breck; it turns out that they had not
installed any service packs but were running Server 2003 straight out of
the box. They're going to install the SP at the next scheduled
maintenance window and re-test; I'm looking forward to the results,
although it may not be till the end of the week or even after New Year.

Thanks again for your help,

Hi Chris:

As you may have seen, my client has discovered that they sre running
W2003S without any service packs. They're going to update it at the next
maintenance window and we'll see what happens.

Have you guys had other issues with services hanging with W2003S ?

Thanks for your help,

Nigel

Well, the issue has finally been solved! It appears that there was a
"subtle interaction", to quote the client, between Sybase Java DLLs and
one older Java DLL used by an older version of another application
running on the same server. Once this was noticed and tidied up,
everything is running as it should.

However, one of the interesting things this episode uncovered was a
fault in their procedures for installing new servers. Good things do
happen by accident sometimes - they have plugged a hole in their
procedures, and they're still going to update to the new service pack.

Thanks again, and a Merry Xmas to all - at least to all who celebrate Xmas!
