Author Backup db from Network Server to Client

We recently upgraded from ASA 7.0.2.1462 to ASA 9. Previously, users

were able to back up the database and log files that are located on our

network servers to a local client machine (from that client machine).

However, we seem to have lost that capability in ASA9. I am no longer

allowed to browse to any local drives when I'm in the backup utility and

when I manually enter a local directory and click finish to start the

backup, the database and log do not get copied to that specified local

drive. The note under the directory window states that "this file name

is relative to the server computer" but we were always able to backup to

a client machine in previous versions of ASA.. Is there still a way to

do this in ASA9? (we've tried the Creat Backup Images utility)

Does this sound like your problem?

========(Release Build - Engineering Case #355516)=========
When being asked for the name of a new file in the utility wizards (for
example, the Create Database wizard), clicking the "Browse..." button
and choosing an existing file in the file dialog, would have caused
a prompt asking to replace the file. This was erroneous, since once
returning to the wizard and clicking Next, a "You must specify a new
file" error message would have been displayed. This has been fixed.
Now, the file dialog no longer asks to replace the file when a new file
is required.

If so you will need to go to either 9.0.2 or 9.0.1 and some ebf higher
than 1865 (ie any currently available one).

Hi,

We also have the same problem. This option was available in earlier releases
but in ASA 8+ not available.

The option should still be there. See my other posting about a probable
bug fix for this.

If that is not your solution, then post more details about the exact version
and nature of the problem you are seeing.

No Nick, this is not the problem we're talking about. We are currently on
ASA version 9.0.2.2451. The problem occurs when we try to back up a database
that resides on our network server to a directory on a client pc by using
the "create backup images" utility from that client machine. When we reach
the screen in which we're prompted to specify the directory where we want to
save the backup images, we are unable to browse to the desired directory on
the client machine (browse button is grayed out). We can manually type in
the directory (e.g. C:\Backup) to get beyond that screen (BUT it seems that
we should still be able to browse to it as in previous versions). Then,
after the backup process appears to successfully finish, the database does
not appear in the specified client directory (C:\Backup). This client backup
was always available in previous versions of ASA (7 and earlier) and is
something that we need to do often in our office. Thanks for any help you
can provide.

You'll need to use the dbbackup command line utility to do this. dbbackup
will place the backup on the client machine when you connect to a network
server.

Thanks Reg. We knew that we could use the dbbackup command line option but
alot of our users have become accustomed to using the backup through Sybase
Central and are asking why that option has been taken away. Do you know
why this change was made?
