Author Sybase Central ASA plugin: connection error

I am using Sybase Central (version 4.3.0.2398) with the ASA and Mobilink
Synchronization plugins (versions 9.0.2.3044), and attempting to connect
to an Oracle database (version 9i 9.2.0.1.0) via an iAnywhere ODBC
driver (Oracle Wire Protocol version 4.20.00.81).

I am able to connect with the Mobilink Synchronization plugin, but when
attempting to connect with the ASA plugin, I receive the error message:
"The information required to display the database in Sybase Central
could not be obtained."

The ODBC connection tests complete fine, and I am connecting as the user
"mobilink" which is the Oracle schema containing all mobilink system
tables. I have also attempted this operation using the database owner
username.

I have verified that two other computers (running the same versions)
experience the same error message from Sybase Central.

I *was* able to connect from Sybase Central using the ASA plugin a few
days ago, and have not been able to identify anything that has been changed.

Can anyone tell me what type of "information" is required to display an
Oracle database in Sybase Central?

Thanks!!

As far as I know, the ASA plugin is not designed to work with Oracle.
It is to administer ASA databases.

That's interesting. I cannot find any reference to Oracle being
accessed via the ASA plugin in the SQLAnywhere documentation.

I wonder what it is you are hoping to do with Sybase Central (the ASA
plugin) for your Oracle database? Wouldn't one of "their" tools be a
better choice? [I'm not being sarcastic here, I'm truly interested in
what you are hoping to get from using SC].

We have a project which includes synchronizing Ultralite databases with
an Oracle consolidated database using Mobilink. I thought Sybase
Central would be a useful tool to view and manage the Mobilink objects
in the consolidated database (property sheets for publications, etc.).

Please let me know if I'm going down the wrong path!!

A *consolidated* database does not have publications. A *reference*
database might (depending on which UL API/build process you are using),
but reference databases *must* be ASA and are only used during the
development/compile cycle, not in production.

ML consolidated objects can be maintained via the ML plugin (which you
indicated you are using against Oracle).

Hope this helps,

Thanks Greg, this does help.

I have been developing the sync. logic using an ASA database as the
remote, and Oracle as the consolidated; and intend to move the ASA
structure to Ultralite for the production version.

That being said, will the publication definitions live in the Ultralite
databases? Are publications the best way to go with Ultralite? We have
been under the impression that a reference database is not necessary in
an "Ultralite on handhelds using Mobilink to sync. with Oracle" scenario.

Thanks again!!

Which UL API are you going to be using (C++ API? UL.NET? ESQL? etc...)

We’re using Ultralite for Crossfire/MobileVB.
