Author Got to plug ASA at a Microsoft event!!

Hey everyone...

I went down to a Microsoft Smart Client event down in Atlanta last Tuesday
(6/21/05). Close to 100 people there. (I Love the idea behind smart
clients, and since PowerBuilder is going in that direction, I figured I
would go down and check it out).

Anyway, one portion of the event was dedicated to Mobile Smart Clients and
they briefly touched on SQL Server CE. Somebody there asked if there were
any other vendors that had a database that would run on a Pocket PC. The
speaker said he didn't think so, but asked if anyone knew of any.

(Opportunity Knocking Here!!)

So I raised my hand and informed the speaker that Sybase has a version of
SQL Anywhere/ASA that will run on a Pocket PC. Discussed what its
capabilities are and even got to cover the Ultralite technology. So I got a
good 3 or 4 minute Sybase/iAnywhere plug in. The speaker actually repeated
it to the class for anyone that didn't hear, and to top it off, he gave me a
128 Meg jump drive (memory stick) as a prize for stumping the instructor. I
was kind of shocked to how receptive he was to the information.

Just thought I would pass this on. I'm still amazed at home much easier it
is to manage a SQL Anywhere database vs. one running under Microsoft SQL
Server.

cool stuff

I'm working with ASA since 1997 and love it's easy maintenance and good
performance. During the last month I had to do some performace-critical
tasks on a MS SQL-Server machine. By now this DB has grown up to 36 GB and
is running OK. But there were some bad issues belonging to timeouts on the
connections via ODBC which even Microsoft could not solve (8 weeks by now).

There are some very nice features coming with SQL Server like the DTS. Easy
and powerful. But sometimes it doesn't seem to be as reliable as ASA to me.
So SQL Anywhere still is the first choice for me (where ever the customer
isn't focused on Microsoft).
