ASA 9 for Linux or Windows?
|

| I'm choosing now OS for database server. Are there any essetial
defferences between windows and linux versions of ASA 9?
In the first place I'm interesting in these points:
1) Performance of ASA at multiuser job. Impact of heavy queries on the
performance of other connections at single-CPU server
2) The same for multi-processor server
3) Reliability. Stability at abnormal shudowns, for example hardware reset
Also it is very interesting why linux EBF's released later than windows
ones. Current windows version is 9.0.2.2551, but for linux 9.0.1.1965 still.

"Performance" is one of those arbitrary things. It is next to
impossible to say that one configuration is "better" than another as
there are so many factors involved. However, for a properly tuned OS,
hardware, database and application, I would not expect a radically
different result between these platforms.

ASA is designed to remain consistent in the event of abnormal shutdowns.
With the appropriate backup-and-recovery processes in place, and a
proper production environment, you should expect to be able to recover
your database (or at least your data) in almost any circumstance. Though
there are extreme exceptions like your machine room burning down. Even
then there are ways to design your system to handle even this type of
catastrophe (offsite backups, etc...)

MS-Windows is the main platform our customer base requests and that our
development team uses. Other platforms get released as they become
ready, typically a couple of months afterwards. Engineering could take
the stance of not releasing anything until all platforms are ready, but
why make people wait? And since ASA is very cross-platform, it is quite
possible (and easy) for someone to develop on one platform and port to
another when it becomes ready.
