| Hi there
Just curious, how came the name Jasper?
Does it have any allusions to Karl Jaspers?

The previous two releases were code-named Vail and Banff. I don't know
the codename of v7...
[I wanted to get this out so a search for "SQLAnywhere" and one or more
of Vail, Banff and Jasper gets a hit ;-) ]

v7 was Aspen. After that, we decided to move from Colorado to the Great
White North. We've talked about using "Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump" for
v11, but it's probably too long. :-)

I am Swiss ... how could I know about stems of code names? You would neither if were to call a product Sitter ...
I just know the philosopher and psychiatrist Karl Jaspers ... and I wondered how ASA Jasper relates to Karl Jasper's thinking ..

I vote for "Breckenridge" as the next codename :)

It would have to be Jaspers' writings on individual freedom, not his
interest in paranoia, psychosis and hallucinations, or suffering,
conflict, guilt, chance and death :)

| Here is the definitive answer on our code names. I created most of them.
The code names are all related to skiing, a favourite pastime of our VP of
Engineering, Dave Neudoerffer.
Whistler - code name for technology that was intended to go into SQL
Anywhere version 6
- A world famous ski resort in western Canada
Aspen - code name for SQL Anywhere version 7
- ski resort and town in Colorado, USA
Vail - code name for SQL Anywhere version 8
- ski resort and town in Colorado, USA
Banff - code name for SQL Anywhere version 9
- National Park, Town, and ski resort in Alberta, Canada
Jasper - code name for next major release of SQL Anywhere
- National Park, town, and ski resort in Alberta, Canada
?? - code name for Jasper + 1 release of SQL Anywhere
- this code name is still undecided.
-> we would like to continue with the "ski" theme, but it has been pointed
out that both Banff and Jasper are perhaps better known as Canadian National
Parks, so perhaps we should change to another National Park, or perhaps an
Ontario Provincial Park.

Probably shouldn't use "Glacier", though! Working at "Glacier" speeds
isn't really the impression you want leave!

I still vote for "Breckenridge" which will soon have the "highest

| And I guess "Perisher" (snowfields in Australia) would suffer from the same

That's the highest *chair* lift. But I would vote for Breckenridge too;
I've never skied it, but I love the town. I visited there when I went
skiing at Keystone and Arapahoe Basin (which I thought was the highest
ski area in the U.S.)

I think we may have doomed "ski resort" as a source for code names...
that may not be a bad thing, since many did not know how to spell or
pronounce "Bannf", er, "Banff" :)

| <just a thought>
Since I believe Canada has lead on the
"UNESCO World Heritage Parks" list
we should maybe go that route; if my vote
counts that is.
For a possible candidates list
http://www.pc.gc.ca/progs/spm-whs/itm2-/index_e.asp
My leading candidates are
Nahanni National Park Reserve
The very first, ever! The park was inscribed on UNESCO's
World Heritage List in 1978. And very proud of that too!
http://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/nt/nahanni/index_E.asp
Kluane/Wrangell - St. Elias/Glacier Bay/Tatchenshini - Alsek
The first bi-national entry on the World Heritage list
http://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/yt/kluane/index_E.asp
Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, Alberta/Montana
The first international 'peace' park
http://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/ab/waterton/index_E.asp
</just a thought >
<just a 2nd thought>
Waterton-Glacier or just Waterton is much much
bettern that Glacier as a name

| Here is a very good reason to move away from codenames based on ski resorts,
especially Canadian ones!
The code name "Blackcomb" was originally assigned to a version of Windows
that was planned to follow Windows XP (codenamed "Whistler"; both named
after the Whistler-Blackcomb resort) in both client and server versions.
However, in August 2001, the release of Blackcomb was pushed back several
years and Vista (originally codenamed "Longhorn", after a bar in the
Whistler-Blackcomb resort) was announced as an intermediary.
