Author Change the name "Sybase Central"
Breck Carter

2006-02-20, 9:23 am

Please change the name "Sybase Central" to something else without the
word "Sybase" in it.

The version of Sybase Central that ships with SQL Anywhere really
doesn't have anything to do with Sybase... it doesn't even *work* with
ASE.

SQL Anywhere is a great product, ASE is not, and the word "Sybase"
just confuses people.

Never having used ASE, I have always assumed (given the name) that all
Sybase products *especially* ASE work with Sybase Central.

If it doesn't, I agree totally with you - change the name.

Agreed to that, and with no time wasted, came with new name suggestions
(after considerations of "Sybase Carter" or "Breck Central"):

"Sybase Metra"
"ASA Jesusa"
"Jolly Jasper"
"Clown Central"

Now for the serious ones :)

"ASA Central" (really an unexpected suggestion)
"ASA Insider"
"SA Studio Insider"
"Studio Control"
"ASA Commander"

No more "ASA", that name is being dropped in the next version.

Instead of "clown" how about "Krump Central" for that edgy,
Los-Angeles-post-Rodney-King clown dancing feel...

Or replace it with Sybase Workspace + functionalities in Sybase Central not
in Workspace.

I personally would LOVE to see the current Sybase Central plugin ported over
to Eclipse...

That would be FANTASTIC! I would then be able to do almost all my
development, both java and database, in Eclipse...

I vote "no" for the following reasons:

1. An Eclipse plugin would require a significant effort.

2. It would introduce a second version to be maintained since not
everyone has bought into Eclipse or Sybase Workplace.

3. It would add no new functionality of any real significance.

4. Resources are limited, and I would rather see the effort spent on
something more useful.

Plus, it would really irritate folks who want a native Windows C
version... I don't want to wake up THAT sleeping bear :)

I vote for "SQL Central"... that requires *zero* effort for
engineering, it's just and image-and-docs thing. Not even the
executable file name scview.exe needs to change.

Plus, it was once called SQL Central, and the engine itself is going
back to SQL Anywhere.
